Thanks! I have about a half million to invest.
Actually I do have a half million to invest. I don’t use a financial advisor, he’d just try to sell me something he gets a commission for.

Yea. Don’t invest.
Gee, you’re funny.
You do not have half a million to invest, or you wouldn’t be asking for investment advice on Y!A. You’d be employing the services of an Independent Financial Advisor. We’re not that stupid.
To answer the question, travel back in time to 2006/7 if you’re looking for A tranche corporate bonds with a decent coupon. It’s a different world now.
Technically, bonds dont pay a dividend. They pay interest.
You can easily research the bond ratings for major companies. the best bonds pay the lowest rates. If you are determined to buy bonds, I suggest you buy a blue chip boind fund from a blue chip company like Fidelity instead. It will provide you with all their expertise, and the advantage of placing your money in a broad portfolio of bonds, liniting your exposure that you would have if you bought only a few on your own.
If you insist on buying bonds directly, the highest rated are going to be Exxon/Mobil. (making 40 billion in profit last year, and historically more than 20 billion a year for each of the past 20 years limits their perceived risk of ever going out of business).
Yes, structure the investment grade corporates into a bond ladder with maturities between 2 and 10 years. With 500k to allocate I would choose about 15 different issues, about 30-35k in each.
If your broker is fidelity or schwab you can view their inventory on line while the market is open, don’t bother looking after hours or weekends, as they pull their inventory in.
You are looking on the secondary market for issues selling below par. Lean toward non callable issues.
Here’s a link to a fidelity screen, not sure it will be good:

google for HSFX Asset Management and start growing your half of million! In the end, if you love it!
